General Daily Insight

The quirky Aquarius Moon can put us on edge today. Meanwhile Venus and Mars, the cosmic lovers, form aspects to erratic Uranus, heightening our attraction to anything unusual and increasing anxiety. Life is unsettling, for we want something different than what we already have. We explore without safety nets as our desires lure us into new territory. The evening may bring a soothing wave of sweetness as the Moon enters gentle Pisces at 9:29 pm EDT.

The Empress
Traditionally entitled "Empress," this major arcana or "trump" card portrays the energy of the Great Mother. She is Nature, around us but also within us, the ever-unfolding Source of life-giving power. She is often pictured as a pre-Christian Goddess, as the one whom the High Priestess is channeling down to earth for the rest of us.

In medieval Europe, the Empress card was painted to represent whatever Queen currently ruled the land, probably to satisfy the Inquisitors. But the scholars of the Renaissance and beyond had no doubt of her true identity, although she could not be fully revealed on Tarot cards as the "woman clothed with the sun" until after the French Revolution.

This supreme archetype of femininity also symbolizes fertility. It is She who provides us nourishment and security. She is also sometimes seen as delighting us with flowers and fruit. A potentially terrifying aspect of this archetype manifests itself whenever karmic mood swings wipe out our plans, like a storm that has come upon us. Whatever happens, the Empress is the Source of our Embodiment and of Natural Law. She might even be called "the Great Recycler."

Passion Within Reason

Reviewing relationships is a good idea during the first half of October as mental Mercury is moving backwards in Libra, the sign of partnership. It's time to undo unfair deals, reconnect with someone from the past, and confront secrets that are coming to light. Delicate negotiations may be required, but if you don't have all the facts you need, wait until Mercury turns direct on October 15 to pursue important issues.

It's wise to move cautiously on the delicate matters of love and money since assertive Mars enters passionate Scorpio on October 3, adding intensity to every action and word. This is excellent for making the most of your personal resources, enabling you to dig in deeply to break through barriers or plant a seed that can grow in even the rockiest soil. However, fighting can be fierce with the warrior planet in this potent sign. Choose your battles carefully so that you can apply this force where you need it instead of letting resentment build up inside or wasting this power on an insignificant event. The always-interesting subject of relationships is also highlighted at the Full Moon on October 14. The Sun in Libra, which seeks accommodation through compromise, is opposed by the Moon in independent Aries. The struggle to meet others halfway while maintaining a sense of personal authority can fire up emotions in a hurry. Impulsive reactions can have damaging consequences. Think carefully before making a rash statement that will push someone away. Venus, the planet of love, is also in Scorpio until October 18, multiplying emotions that produce a lasting impact. This isn't a time to play with a person's affections since total commitment or total separation may be the only options.

The Sun enters steamy Scorpio on October 22 to push partnerships to another level. Instead of sweetly smiling and putting up with unsatisfying alliances -- both personal and professional -- the gloves come off. The Scorpio Sun is shining in the dark places of desire and dissatisfaction. Even sweet Venus in optimistic Sagittarius (as of October 18) can't cover up these inconvenient truths. Putting a smiley face on a bad business deal or an unfulfilling relationship is not a solution but a way to prolong the problem. Whether you're ready to make a change or not, it's vital not to deny your feelings. Scorpio can take us to the bottom where things look dark, but making changes at this level has enormous capacity to produce positive and lasting results. But one of the secrets of this Pluto-ruled sign is that to get ahead you have to let go of something. Releasing a person, belief, attitude or behavior that's holding you back can be difficult, yet is a key to tapping into Scorpio's power. A great opportunity to shed whatever's unwanted comes with the New Moon in Scorpio on October 28. This union of the Sun and Moon connects will and instinct, making an effective team for sweeping away the old and inviting in the new.
