Why Kelly Osbourne's Comments About Latinos Were So Offensive

Some people are asking why they should be offended by Kelly Osbourne's comments about Latinos on The View, and my question is why not?

"If you kick every Latino out of this country, then who is going to be cleaning your toilet, Donald Trump?"

This is a generalized statement. It was offensive and ugly. It is also a stereotype Latinos have tried exceedingly hard to rid themselves of. We appreciate that you view LATINOS as the hardworking class that will do anything to support their families, but PLEASE do not reduce our culture to toilet scrubbers.

Latinos embody various traits, ethics, and jobs, but they are not all toilet scrubbing illegal immigrants. This brings me to my second point: BEING LATINO DOES NOT EQUAL ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT!!

When Kelly Osbourne used the term "Latinos" she was speaking in reference to the statement Donald Trump had made about illegal immigrants. She was trying to make a point in defense of illegal immigrants, but instead (once again) generalized lumping Latinos as illegal immigrants.

My grandfathers and my dad are all United States veterans- not illegals. My family has proudly served this country with honor. Despite this.. we're still seen as toilet-scrubbing- weed-picking Latinos? ::HEAVY SIGH:: I am so over the stereotyping.

I am raising Latinos, I do not want them to grow up with the same shitty stereotypes I had to grow up with. I am pouring my heart and soul into these American Latinos, and people are still pushing this...

Osbourne posted this apology on her Facebook page:

I want to start by saying I ALWAYS take responsibility for my actions. In this particular case I will take...

Why should you, me, or our children have to settle for ignorant statements that get brushed off as  a "fuck up"?

Lovely, I am glad Kelly Osbourne apologized, but what does that mean? Will there be a discussion? Will she engage in a discussion? Will she say she has Latino friends? Do we keep letting ignorance prevail?

Yes, I scrub my toilets. Damn straight if money was tight and the babies needed food on their plates I WOULD SCRUB TOILETS. I'm not above that. But let it be known I am here legally and I am more than a toilet-scrubbing-Latina.

To recap:

Not all Latinos are toilet scrubbers.

Doesn't equal

Also, when speaking  of a group of people using generalized statements, although you may not mean to be racist, it totally comes off as racist.
