It's Almost Time to Listen to Your Mother

It's almost here! Mother's Day! And with it, the Listen to Your Mother show (sponsored in part by BlogHer) in 24 cities across America.

Listen to Your Mother is the brainchild of blogger Ann Imig of Ann's Rants, who got the first glimmerings of the idea while watching the BlogHer Voices of the Year community keynote in 2009. Ann started out in her hometown of Madison, Wisconsin, and this year Listen to Your Mother will be happening in May in 24 cities across America, including: Austin, Boulder, Chicago, Denver, Eastern Iowa, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Madison, Milwaukee, New York City, Northern Utah, Northwest Arkansas, Northwest Indiana, Oklahoma City, Plumas County, Providence, Raleigh-Durham, Sacramento, San Francisco, Spokane, St. Louis, the Twin Cities, Washington, DC or Wilmington. The local shows are at all different times, so please check listings here.

All of the LTYM shows are produced and directed locally by volunteers chosen by the national team. These movers and shakers of the online and offline world were chosen from a pool of applicants in fall 2012. Producing and directing a LTYM show is a huge responsibility. According to LTYM's website:

LTYM considers a combination of the following attributes in our local directors and producers:

  • Active involvement in community-building relationships both in the online space and in your city

  • Readiness to embrace the often first-time challenges of directing, funding (through ticket proceeds and/or local sponsorship dollars) and producing a local live-reading event

  • Dedication to supporting other LTYM cities, honoring the LTYM mission and process as established, as well as actively contributing to the LTYM 2013 process as it evolves.

  • A commitment to seeking a diversity of readers and stories beyond your social scene, ethnicity, demographic, etc.

The local directors and producers include: Wendi Aarons, Stacey Conner, Elise Raimi, Melisa Wells, Tracey Becker, Lela Davidson, Stephanie McCratic, Kate Coveny Hood, Stephanie Stearns Dulli, Liz McGuire, Amy Wilson, Holly Rosen Fink, Varda Steinhardt, Kirsten Patel, Margaret Andrews, Nichole Beaudry, Julie Bohannon, Galit Breen, Heather Davis, Naomi Francis, Heather Smith Friedman, Margaret Elysia Garcia, Jen Gaskell, Ellie Grossman, KeAnne Hoeg, Heather Ann Johnson, Heather King, Jessica Kupferman, Lyz Lenz, Marty Long, Erin Margolin, Shoshana Martyniak, Michelle McNally, Judy M. Miller, Carla Molina, Pam Moore, Tracy Morrison, Jen Neumann, Lovelyn Palm, Kari Paulsey, Misti Pryor, Laura Edwards Ray, Vikki Reich, Alexandra Rosas, Laura Seymour, Becky Sewell, Shari Simpson, Jennifer Steinberg, Laura Rossi Totten, Suzanne Tucker, Roxanne Valladao, Zakary Watson and Joelle Wisler.

Bonus: In every participating metro area, a percentage of ticket proceeds goes to a charity of the local directors' choice. Check out the causes here.

Each show in each of the 24 cities has around 12-15 participants. I auditioned for the Kansas City show and was thrilled to make the line-up. Stacy Morrison, BlogHer's editor-in-chief, will be performing in the New York City show. If you're in our areas, please come on out!

How will you celebrate Mother's Day?
