Are you really surprised by this? It's like "the hip bone is connected to the leg bone" song but on a microscopic scale.

A new study is the first of its kind because it looked at living humans, not autopsy patients. The researchers found that too much bad cholesterol (LDL) or too little good cholesterol (HDL) appear to increase the levels of amyloid that contributes to Alzheimer's.

What's important to note is that the 74 people they studied were "normal and free of any symptoms of dementia." That means that the effects of cholesterol may occur before any symptoms of Alzheimer's manifest. This is good news, because it means we may be able to develop some early intervention drugs, or even better, interview with dietary changes.

So what should your cholesterol levels be?

The American Heart Association recommends keeping bad (LDL) cholesterol below 100 mg/dL and good (HDL) cholesterol above 60 mg/dL.
