Gwyneth Paltrow Simultaneously Tops Lists of "Most Beautiful" and "Most Hated": What's Up?
[Editor's Note: This week Gwyneth Paltrow topped People Magazine's annual Most Beautiful list, but that's not the only list she took the top spot on. Star Magazine released it's own list this week: The 20 Most Hated Celebrities, and Gwynnie snatched first prize there as well. Laura from Hollywood Housewife asks what gives. I'm all ears. -- Morgan]

Color me shocked when the "20 Most Hated Celebrities" list came out and Gwyneth Paltrow was number 1. The MOST hated celebrity. What is happening there? What has Gwynnie done that is so offensive? She's beautiful? She's talented? She has lots of money? She's dated and/or married beautiful and/or talented people? She swears she never wears makeup?
Eviable, totally. Hate-able? No.
I'm biased, though. I have loved Gwyneth Paltrow since even before she donned her pink princess dress to win the Oscar. I cried when she did so. I subscribe to (and love) goop. Sure, I cringed a little when she named her daughter Apple. But if I told you some of the names in Pirate's music class, you would beat your head on the desk. Funky monikers comes with the Hollywood territory.
At first I didn't even really believe the Hated Celebrity list. I mean, it's published by Star Magazine, hardly the place I turn for accurate information. But then I mentioned it to a friend and she responded with, "Oooooh, yeah, people hate Gwyneth Paltrow."
This article in New York magazine made a lot of the points that sloshed through my head when I first read the list. "Sloshed" may not be the best choice of words here, if you know what I mean. But why on earth do people hate Gwyneth Paltrow and Kathryn Hiegl (???), women who at least seem to have it somewhat together, and embrace (relatively speaking) people who have made total train wrecks of their fame?
It can't be simple jealousy. Can it?
WHY IS CHRIS BROWN #20 ON THIS LIST?
With celebrity - especially actor/actress fame, people seem to be more forgiving of musicians as "artsy" and sports stars as "heroes" - comes a certain amount of Haters Gonna Hate. But this seems to go beyond that, doesn't it? Look at the list again. Does "hating" Matt Lauer make sense to you? He may not be your cup of tea. Anne Hathaway's haircut may be atrocious. But to use the word "hate"? Wars have been fought over less.
Reese Witherspoon isn't on the list this year, but I wonder if she will be next. She is possibly my favorite of all time. Second maybe to Gwyneth. But social media was abuzz with her arrest last weekend. People were positively gleeful over the "downfall" of America's sweetheart.
While drunk driving is very, very serious, I admit that I giggled when she allegedly said something along the lines of "I am an American, standing on American soil!" She's one of the biggest celebrities in the country, so I didn't take her mouthiness to the cops as "Don't you know who I am?" I believe her actual quote was more like, "You're about to be national news."
And he was.
