Pee Pee in a bottle

If a product could simultaneously be the stupidest and smartest idea ever, My Pee Pee Bottle might just be it.

Kids who are newly and not-so-newly potty-trained are an exasperating group to go out in public with. Inevitably, they will have an urgent need to pee at the most inopportune time. Like when you’re merging onto the freeway or just pulling away from that gas station restroom where they swore up and down that they didn’t have to go. For boys, it’s a bit easier to stealthily pull over to the side of the road and water a nearby shrub or tree. It makes you long for the ease and convenience of diapers again.  So, no, I don’t think it’s a crazy idea to have a portable potty for road trips or emergency situations.

What I think is crazy is the Pee Pee bottle’s uncanny resemblance to a regular old, wide-mouth water bottle.  In fact, I have three Nalgene bottles in my cupboard that look exactly like this. Now why would I need to buy these bottles when apparently any water bottle will do? And regular water bottles won’t have the potentially embarrassing “My Pee Pee Bottle” written all over it. I can’t imagine having that thing roll out of my purse or diaper bag and risk looking like an incontinent freak. Plus, I wonder if your child will develop a Pavlovian conditioned urge to pee every time s/he sees a water bottle?

Now that these Nalgene polycarbonate bottles have been recalled, instead of tossing them, maybe I’ll keep them in my car as emergency pee catchers for the whole family. Maybe I can go to the craft store and paint everybody’s name on it so they have their own personalized pee bottles. That way, if anybody accidentally drinks out of them, at least they’ll be ingesting their own brand.
