Cleaning day

Wednesdays are my favorite day of the week. Not because it’s “hump day” but because it is the day my beloved cleaning lady comes. It’s the one day of the week when the beds are neatly made and the sheets freshly washed. My towels are fluffy and warm from the dryer and my floors are sparkling clean and free of cat hair balls and crushed pirate booty crumbs.

I know it’s a fleeting pleasure because my boys attack the cleanliness with the same enthusiasm they attack a blank canvas with paint. I try to do maintenance throughout the week but within a few days, it gets unspeakably grungy again. By the time Tuesday night rolls around, the floor is spackled with dried applesauce and splotches of sticky jam. But since I know my cleaning lady is coming the next morning, I don’t bother.

I’ve had the same cleaning lady for almost ten years and she’s seriously indispensable. Before I hired her, I made a lame effort to keep the house clean by myself for about a month before giving up. No matter how much our fortunes rose and fell, the one thing I refused to give up was my cleaning lady. I’d rather give up going to Starbucks, getting my nails done and start going to Supercuts before I give up this particular luxury (which has become a necessity as far as I’m concerned).

She’s the single reason I have quality time with my children at all. Otherwise, I’d be spending all my time scrubbing toilets and floors. As it is, I’m always scaling Mt. Washmore and washing dishes and putting toys away. I’m an indifferent housekeeper, I’ll admit. But when my kids grow up and reflect on their childhood, I doubt they’ll fondly reminisce about how clean the house was or how neatly organized the pantry was. Hopefully they’ll remember the books we read together and the walks we shared and the crafts we painted. And that on Wednesdays, the house looked amazing.
