Fit and fab … feet!

April 20th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

Under normal circumstances, after a marathon day of furniture shopping, my feet would be killing me.

Today though, they feel great.

Check out my new find:

OK, they aren’t the strappy pink sandals I tend to gravitate toward - but what they may lack in sexiness, they make up in extreme comfort. With these Fit Flops, (no, that’s not a typo!) you get a workout while you walk: literally!

Born out of a UK fitness craze, every step you take in your FitFlops improves your core muscle strength, absorbs shock on your joints and back and adds strength and tone to muscles in your feet, legs, buttocks, stomach and back.

These shoes were created by Marcia Kilgore (founder of Bliss Spa) and has a midsole that extends the amount of time that the slow twitch muscles - whose fibers produce energy by converting fats into energy - are engaged during each step. It’s freaky sci-fi meets summer-shoe comfort, and but it works!

Look for them in the Bliss Spa catalog (and tell them I sent you!).

Flipping for my flip flops

April 13th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

Like most girls around the city, from the first sunny Spring day through around Labor Day, I live in flip flops. This means, as soon as the sun starts shining, I go pedicure-ing.

Yesterday was bittersweet though, since I knew this may be the end of an era for me. There’s a sampling of local Brooklyn salons I go to on a regular basis for my weekly (or biweekly) beautification needs. Now that I’m moving, my local haunts are changing, and it may very well be the final time I’m at my local ($12 pedicure) salon.

Ready to embrace summertime, I came carrying my favorite OPI shade (Kiss on the Chic) and some light reading (my advance of the new Hungry-Girl dining guide). I was so revved to share my budding news of new neighborhood and exciting new home, though, I did not plan to spend much time reading said book. Turns out though, the conversation went in one direction, and stayed there!

From OKA b., the Belmont flip flops are my first new shoe find of the season. What I loved initially was that they embodied my signature colors and pattern, but once I put them on my (newly) pink toesies, there was a whole new reason to love them.

Not only do they not hurt (as some flip flops are wont to do, if the thong is not well placed or configured), but once on, they literally make your feet feel better than they do bare! Wildly, they are dishwasher-safe and antimicrobial - but even cooler, they have built in massage beads that pamper the feet with each step.

However, they stole my thunder. The girls at the salon were all so in love with my flip flops - they hardly spoke to me about anything else! And thus, I never got a chance to tell them this was possibly goodbye. (To me, and my flip flops.)

The “it” bag!

March 18th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

If your work involves being at the office all day and heading to events at night, it’s important to have a bag that fulfills all your needs. It should be roomy enough for all your various essentials (from the obvious to the bizarre) and stylish enough that the girls at the bar will be glaring at you.

Finding such a bag has been a constant struggle for me. I find myself either walking around with giant totes, or wearing cute little clutches and supplementing with various small shopping bags. (Nothing says tres chic like appearing at an editor’s event accessorized like a bag lady.)

However, I think I finally found my “it” bag!

zouk_theda_cognac.jpg

The Zouk Theda satchel is made of rich Italian leather and accented with gold brass. The bag is large enough for all your daily necessities and lined with pockets to keep it all organized - plus trendy and sexy enough to take with you no matter where the evening ends up.

It’s perfect whether you are a stylish exec or a fashionable student - or anything in between - who needs a bag that will impress your friends over happy hour and your coworkers over staff meetings.

Theda retails for $575 and is available at boutiques nationwide, including Anthropologie, Shop Intuition and online at www.ziordia.com.

We have one to give away right here though, to the reader who sends the most horrifyingly humorous answer to our poll. Quite simply, list what is in your everyday bag - no matter how ordinary or obscene. Our winner will be notified March 25.

Scarlet nights!

March 5th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

If you haven’t noticed from what I named the love of my life - my new puppy Scarlette - red is among the colors I’m pretty darn enamored with. Scarlette got her name because since the day she was born, she had a bit of a red tinge to her. (Especially when she cries, which is often. My baby is a bit of crimson-faced drama queen.)

My friends at QVC are right on top of the red-hot trend this season, and just sent me some goodies that have me feeling pretty flushed myself.

pic12455.jpg I love this sexy cami’s day-to-night value. I can wear it to work with a blazer and then at night with heels and a sexy jeans! It’s Shop Intuition by Jaye Hersh Stretch Silk Cami with Stud Detail from QVC, and it’s *so* cute I think I may wear it to a beauty editor’s event I’m going to this evening!

pic25734.jpg This season, all the style experts are advising weaving just a touch of trend throughout your wardrobe in order to be up-to-date without breaking the bank. With both red and patent hotter than ever, this bag is a great way for me to use accents to stay on trend in two areas! (Plus no worries of fitting my butt into THIS.) QVC offers this totally sexy Maxx New York Domed Quilted Patent Satchel in scorching hot red, along with a lot of this season’s other “it” colors. I think it may become my new everyday bag!

The High-Heel Hangover

December 4th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

I can predict the weather.

For instance, this morning, in preparation for a day at work followed directly by a holiday party, I am wearing a dress and very-high-heeled boots.

Of course, it would snow!

As I walk around with soon-to-be-ugly-and-blistered feet, I figured it might be nice to save all of you from a similar high-heel-hangover fate. (You know exactly what I am speaking of: The throbbing and burning you feel after a day or night in heels. )

The good news is, the high heel hangover can be eliminated from your life, without having to give up your sexy-looking feet.

“Damage from wearing heels can limit women’s participation in sports, running and jogging and even walking long distances,” says Dr. Howard Dananberg, a New Hampshire based podiatrist and world renowned speaker. “Proper foot care and paying attention to foot health will ensure you will be able lead an active lifestyle for years to come.” Here are some simple tips from Dr. Dananberg to avoid high heel hangover:

  • Use a weight shifting insole to reduce the amount of pressure on the ball of the foot.
  • Stretch your feet, toes and ankles regularly to keep them strong. This will help when wearing high heels as well as help your feet stay strongif you participate in cardiovascular activity.
  • Make sure your shoes fit. It sounds like common sense, but many women are wearing the wrong size shoe which can cause blisters, bunions, corns and calluses.
  • Do not wear high heels every day. Make sure you alternate high heels with lower more supportive shoes.

Good luck! And remember: If you DO get a high-heel hangover (as I will have tomorrow) - it’s a great excuse for a pedicure!

Shoe Love - Help!

November 4th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

I think I have a problem.

Over the course of the last three days, all of the following have entered my wardrobe:

Aren’t they hot? Seychelles lace-up boots. On sale in Loehmanns, marked down to $49. Plus I had a 20% off coupon. So, of course, I had to get them in black as well…

Oh, and because I have NO self control, I also own these:

They are long, and lean, and lovely, from Penny Loves Kenny. And also, ridiculously inexpensive.

Someone please take away my credit card!

A treat from my friends at Warmbat Australia, the Tas-Mania Errol may look like a fun pair of funky sneakers (check out my spirals!!!) - but they are actually super luxurious too.
