Query to those of you who read the web-news:

June 10th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

So, I just returned home from a trade show and luncheon at the Marriott, feeling rather wilted and sleepy - and wishing I was back in South Beach.

I popped online, and received a G-Chat IM from a friend I hadn’t spoken to in years, saying (sic):

So i went to nypost.com the other day, and got a big pop-up ad — it was for sheknows, and there was your blog, right there on the ad.

i think you’re technically famous now

so congrats

Holy wow. I had no idea! Have any of you seen this ad???

Note: That’s what the ocean is supposed to look like.

I promise to stop gushing and go back to posting about normal stuff now.)

Fun at the Forge

June 5th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

Is it bizarre to be ever so slightly inebriated on a 3-day-long party celebrating an automobile?

Perhaps. But, I assure you, none of us drunk-type people have been driving.

I just returned from the VW welcome dinner for the nine editors on the trip. It was at Forge, a restaurant in South Beach known to have the best steak in America, and one of the best wine cellars in the world.

Of course, I discovered its steak reputation after ordering the grilled salmon. However, I have no regrets - it was the best salmon *ever*.

It’s an interesting spot - at Forge, the distinct smell of money mingles with the intoxicating aroma of dry-aged steaks (which are cooked on an oak-fired grill!). It’s an ornate decor that features antique brick walls, pressed-tin ceiling, giant tapestries and stained-glass windows - our wait staff shared fascinating tales of the origin of these pieces, but, well, three glasses of Champagne in, I’m not the best at remembering said stories.

After dinner (and an unbelievably delicious dessert of Blacksmith Pie…I don’t even know what that is, but I know I love it) we visited Glass for cocktails (and, I confess, per my sheltered existence, my very first time sitting at a table with bottle service). Glass is steeped in Hollywood history, and was once a cigar lounge with private humidors for the likes of Oliver Stone and Bono. The club was transformed when owner Shareef Malnik teamed up with Miami designer Allison Spear to create an upscale lounge space that appealed to the local star-studded crowd.

Have I mentioned yet that I never, ever, ever want to leave?

Tons more pix (with actual people!) to come.

PS: I am somewhat concerned that my most fun “vacation” ever is with complete strangers - who have thus become new friends. And yet, oddly pleased!

What a week!

May 27th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

So, Thursday morning, I am taping my first segment as Wake Up to a Breakup’s resident sex/love expert. It’s a really fun show, capitalizing on the “clicking chicks” phenomenon, with webisodes that target urban, unmarried women age 18-39 searching for answers or escape from romance gone wrong. Content includes advice from experts and authors — including ME - as well as lighthearted comedy spoofs, juicy celebrity break-ups and essential retail therapy.

Clearly, this is a match made in digital heaven - and as online video usage continues to increase while traditional TV viewing declines, I wonder if more and more of these types of programs will find their niche on the Internet … and all of our cable bills will go down? A girl can dream…

Anyway, I’m really excited (and honestly, feel like I should try to become a lot more knowledgeable before then!), but my main concern at this present moment…is deciding what to wear!

(Instructions on my call sheet read “cute dress”. Well….that’s like telling my puppy to remember to bring his slipper!)

Note: As I shall be leaving for South Beach in exactly six days and that event, too, requires due grooming diligence, this week may call for extra-careful pedicure maintenance. I shall keep you posted on how that goes!

Ahem.

May 22nd, 2008 by Aly Walansky

Jealousy manifests itself in such interesting ways.

I”ve blogged before about how people with traditional 9-5 office jobs think they work harder than freelancers. Maybe some of them do, and some of them don’t. I think it’s very much the quality of work you do vs. the structure of how you do it. (i.e. If you are spending all day on GChat or checking your horoscope, clearly you aren’t reinventing the wheel.) Same goes for if you call yourself a freelancer but are actually watching cartoons all day.

I for one work pretty darn hard. And for all the fun projects I get to do, there are those that involve line editing until the wee hours of the morning. And you know what? A lot of the other non-traditionally-employed (ie: people doing their OWN thing, and not someone else’s), are the hardest working people I know.

(Note: I also know some people with normal office jobs who ALSO work very hard, and continue to take their work home with them when they leave said office. And thus, I am not in any way putting down what they do. I’m simply commenting on stone-throwers in ANY career path.)

But what I find interesting is that it’s those very people who DO waste their days away being bored who attack what we all do. Yes, part of my job involves blogging about perceived randomness (but, um, same could have been said for…uh…Seinfeld?) and getting free beauty treatments. But if it wasn’t of value to some people, clearly I wouldn’t be paid a living wage to do it. So, rather than attack what I do, maybe find something for yourself to do that makes you fulfilled enough you don’t need to attack others. I for one am proud to write a daily column that not only lets me share something I love, but lets all of the awesome people who are part of the Alytude family be a part of it.

Oh, and Shoe Goddess: Clearly, you have a few misconceptions about what is vintage vs. out of style. We here at SheKnows would be happy to offer you some advice any time you need! Just, ask nicely next time.

Message of diatribe: Play nice. It’s the mentally feng shui thing to do.

Soap box over. Have a great day, everyone!
