Giveaway: Long Distance Valentine’s Day
Guys, I am home from Vegas for about five minutes - I’ll report more soon. But I have exciting news to share. I’ve partnered with Geek Squad for the most AMAZING giveaway I’ve EVER done.
As you all are (painfully) aware, Valentine’s day is two weeks away.
Geek Squad wants to make it possible for people that live 3,000 miles apart to celebrate Valentine’s Day over a candlelit dinner with the help of technology. They’ll host two simultaneous dinners at BLT Steak in NY and BLT Steak in LA. At each site, there’ll be one side of the table set for a person and the other side set with a computer. Geek Squad Agents at both sites will set up Skype on the computers, so the couple will be able to share candlelit dinner together.
Have you ever been to BLT Steak? I have, and it’s transcendent! Revered Chef Laurent Tourondel created the ultimate recipe, using part French culinary training, part American panache. BLT Steak combines a bistro ambiance with steakhouse fare, where guests partake in creating the ideal BLT meal. Steaks are dressed with a selection of sauces, ranging from Béarnaise to Horseradish, and paired with decadent sides such as Parmesan flavored Gnocchi and oversized Onion Rings. Once you try it, you’ll pretty much know it sets the standard for any steakhouse you ever go to again.
Here’s the exciting part. I get to decide who these couples are! There’ll be TWO winners chosen. Each winner will win one dinner at BLT Steak in NY and one dinner at BLT Steak in LA. This means the winner would have to have their “Valentine” in the city that they’re not in. For example, if the winner is located in NY, their “Valentine” would have to be in LA, and vice versa. The dinner will be on February 12 at 9PM EST/6PM PST. Each winner and their “Valentine” will also get a netbook with a value of at least $350 and a $150 Geek Squad gift card to help them stay connected in the future.
Before I go any further, take note that there’ll be media and pix being taken there - so if you or your mate are camera shy, you may want to think carefully about entering!
To have your chance to be one of the lucky winners, you MUST have a mate in LA and live in NY (or vice versa) - and both be available on Friday, February 12. To have your chance to win, I’m going to make it interesting - you have to have your FRIENDS comment below and say why you and your mate are deserving. the legend of mrs. chu
when i was a little kid, i used to pray for world peace and to marry my mom’s friend whom i thought was the prettiest woman in the world, mrs. chu.
one thanksgiving, i bumped into a gorgeous and wonderful girl, betty. we kept in touch over the years as friends but she lived in LA and i lived in NYC.
she came to visit last halloween and after a few days, i asked her to move here and marry me. we now keep in touch via skype and fall asleep on the phone together every night.
i eventually learned that betty was mrs. chu’s daughter.

I’ve only seen Y a few times since I moved out of New York, but he was key in helping me get to know the city.
He had this androgynous Prince/David Bowie thing going. One of those guys that was too busy being awesome to be bothered with chasing girls. So I was a little stunned to hear about Y and Betty.
What I’m getting at is many people seem to fall in love easily and many of them with great stories. But I didn’t expect it out of Y and that makes it all the more special.

This is a story off a fairytale of sorts! Betty, is as humble and giving as they come. If there is somebody that deserves to be on the receiving end (especially if it is romantic valentine’s dinner), it is Betty (and Y).

This is the sweetest story I’ve read. I cried, and I’m not one to cry over love stories. I have known Betty for such a long time - at least 15 years. She is an amazing soul - caring, geniune, and full of love for others.

Where was this kind of thing when I was in a long distance relationship? We didn’t even have unlimited long distance phone service. Happy to say, we’ve been happily married for almost 14 years. Love the idea!

Y & Betty’s love (much like BLT Steak) is transcendent. I have witnessed their relationship solely via FB (as Betty’s friend, not as a creepy stalker) and I can see this, which tells you that they are already comfortable with public expressions of love (i.e. not even close to camera shy)…AND they would be the perfect pair for this prize! There’s no way to say this without sounding sappy.
I was single for two and a half years, jaded by the New York dating scene and still licking my wounds from a soul-crushing break-up. I went to Burning Man (not for the first time, but the first time in several years) because it felt like a sort of healing journey, something I was supposed to do to complete a cycle.
I met Danny because our camp was small and he was cute and since he was one of the few non-New Yorkers in our group, I didn’t know him yet. Later that night we smooched in a giant pile of pillows, but heck, it’s Burning Man, so I didn’t think much of it. In fact, I was mired in cynicism, thinking, “Oh, you’re probably just a player. You’re not really interested. Whatever.”
He kept popping up, though, sitting across from me at the table, standing next to me at a bar, until my guarded New York heart started believing that maybe—maybe—this guy might be for real. Before he had to leave we spent one magical evening wandering around under the stars… me tucked under is arm in a way that made me feel both safe and excited.
When he asked for my email address I still wasn’t sure whether he was just being polite, but there was a message waiting for me by the time I got home to New York. We sent letters (and by “letters” I mean “emails”) back and forth for two months ala Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning—no phone calls or texts or tweets—before he came to visit me last November, and when he showed up on my doorstep I felt safe and excited all over again.
So now… we text our sweet nothings and pick our sleepytime snuggle position over the phone (“Ok, I’m on my right side and you’re spooning me…”) before we go to sleep (I know, I know… I’m nauseous just reading it) but would much prefer to have casual dinners and wander the city streets hand in hand. He’s smart and funny and cute and tall and strong; he bandages my toes when I make poor footwear choices (Bad Gucci heels! Bad!); and he makes me feel really loved. As anyone who’s been on the dating scene longer than about six months knows, you don’t let that go because of a silly little thing like, say, 3,000 miles of distance. Plus, he started a nonprofit organization to teach ballroom dancing to elementary school kids and seriously… how cute is that?

I’ve known Betty for a couple of years now and I’ve never seen her happier about a guy. Their story is movie worthy, mothers who are best friends and have kids who grow up and know of each other. Suddenly life takes them to two opposite sides of the country, both never finding true love. Then, one serendipitous night the meet again and pleasantly surprised to find out their mother’s are best friends. As her visit to the NYC draws to a close they both wake up to the sad reality that they may never find anyone as perfect for each other again. Will over 3000 miles keep them apart on Valentine’s day, the day of love, the day where Cupid’s strike is globally celebrated? I hope so. That’s why I’m voting for Betty and Y.
