Summer solstice!

I must say, I am deeply humbled at the outpouring of support following the MIA status of my beloved sunglasses. Readers have written in sharing stories of their own sudden losses, and Oakley has contacted me offering to send a new pair. Another fabulous institution (whom I will disclose next week) has invited me in to meet with their style advisor and select the perfect glasses for me.

It appears I will not be blinded by the summer sun after all. And, with Saturday being the first day of summer, I was sort of starting to worry!

I do want to be prepared for my summer face-ssories though (yes, I just totally made up that word) and decided to consult the experts. As the #1 sunglass supplier to the stars, SOLSTICE has helped me out (just in time!) and identified the hottest new trends for the summer season.

Here is what’s expected to get the temperature rising:

* High Shine - Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is wearing the sexiest shades of all? Mirror-like materials with metallic shine leave viewers on the runway wanting more. When the sun is shining or the camera is flashing, sunwear returns the favor! “High Shine” is a flash of the future with its sleek high-tech designs accompanied by the glass-like shine of metal and colorful plastics. “High Shine” shades can be found by designers Giorgio Armani, Jimmy Choo and Emporio Armani.

* Stealth Wealth - Ultra-luxurious jet setters know that confidence is all about how you wear it, not who you wear. “Stealth Wealth” styles offer minimalistic logos or iconic designer brand embellishments known only to those “in the know” or for those opting to fly under the radar. Styles from Gucci, Hugo Boss, Bottega Veneta and Boucheron illustrate this chic look.

* Rainforest - Welcome to a steamy new direction in sunwear. “Rainforest” styles are for those looking for lush, imaginative designs inspired by the colorful foliage and wooden textures of the rain forest. Rich plums, luscious greens, deep blues and earthy browns encompass the true look of the rainforest along with styles with wooden accents. Styles by Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Stella McCartney and Marc Jacobs give a first-class look at Paradise.

* Modern Vintage - Revitalized, renewed and refreshed, traditional favorites are back and better than ever with a modern twist! “Modern Vintage” inspired by classic looks with sophisticated styles like wayfarers,
aviators and cat-eye shapes provide a view with déjà vu. Designers offering a look back at the future in sunwear include YSL, Kate Spade, Juicy Couture and Diesel.

* Be Jeweled - Don’t be afraid to shine in a pair of shades with some detail. More than simple decoration, stones, crystals and studs make a bold statement in sunwear. Chunky and hard-edged, or delicate and refined, the effect is 3D and the look is sure to make heads turn. Prepare to be dazzled by the new jeweled styles. Styles by designers Dior, Valentino, Gucci and Marc by Marc Jacobs bling out the beauty in everyone.

OMG-When I was young we didn’t know about UV rays, only that a good tan looks great. So my friends and I would oil-up with a mixture and baby oil and iodine, and then begin to fry. Once I would have a good amount of color on one side it was time to flip. The theory being that you had to pass through red to get to brown. If I overdid it my mom would make me bathe in vinegar to stop the burning. The I smelled like a burnt salad, but I had excellent color.

One summer I found out snakes aren’t the only ones who can ‘molt’ I got a sunburn so bad that my mom had to peel off my skin for weeks, and the skin on my back came off in one big piece, I felt like a snake!

Two words- sun poisoning. Got it the second day of a tropical summer vacation, and let’s just say it wasn’t the trip I had hoped for. 2 visits to the doctor, blisters, and sleepless nights aren’t exactly my cup of tea, and I ended up miserable on the couch, watching soap operas. At least I had a view of the ocean from the couch, but I’d rather stay home than have such an awful vaca. I never leave my house without SPF on my face now, even in the dead of winter.

I am very vigilant about using sunscreen,m even though I hate the way it feels. (I have YET to find a good-feeling sunscreen! Let me know if you find one!) I can remember once in my “tweens” I was building a sand castle there on my hands and knees. Little did I know, my bum was facing the sun, and my suit had crept up exposing my butt cheeks which has never before seen the sun! I mean they were formerly quite white! Anyway, they got a ROYAL BURN and I could barely sit down!!! :(

Fourth of July fireworks are meant for the sky, not your body…except in my case when an attempt to use pumpable sunscreen left me covered in glorious shades of firework-like spoltches.

    “Ooohhhh say can you SEEEEEEE!”

(PS: Just letting you know, the hyperlink in your blog entry connects to a site that is not Solstice. For some reason, the “e” in solsticestores.com is dropped.)

Have something to add? Of course you do! So post it here:
