“I curse the day you were born!”

May 31st, 2008 by Aly Walansky

I have, minutes ago, returned from seeing Sex and the City.

As I’m sure many of you have not seen it yet, I am hesitant to give away any major plot points.

But I can say:

1 - Watching the movie made me ever-the-more appreciate the awesome female friends I have.

2 - It also made me appreciate cosmos, and cupcakes. (As in the lovely post-movie  chocolate cupcake and cosmo we enjoyed!)

3 - Big/Carrie resolution? I have mixed feelings. Will discuss more when it’s not opening weekend. But..I will say the ending proved to be true to everyone’s character, which is what we truly all hoped for.

More soon…Please share your own thoughts!

PS: Early in the film, Carrie says that all women in the city are looking or one of the two L’s - love or labels. Do you think that’s true?

Ricely riches

May 30th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

I am lucky enough, that while I have a pretty small apartment, I have a ton of cabinet space. However, you’ll notice that several shelves are dedicated predominantly to a specific brand.

Example:

dscn0298.JPGdscn0297.JPG

Check that out. Between the boxes and the microwave pouches, I could probably be snowed in for a good two weeks, and never run out of some variant of rice. And that doesn’t even count the annex supply I keep in storage (i.e. my parents’ basement).

Am I a carb-loving fiend? Well, yes. But not in this case. The Ready Rice variety (which is what mainly dominates my cabinet) is completely kitchen-dummy-proof. You throw it in the microwave, and less than 2 minutes later, have fancy rice on your plate, which you can pretend is a result of your mindful creation. (And not something you tossed in your microwave as you finished flat-ironing your hair.)

And it’s surprisingly healthy too, since it’s made with whole grain rice, it’s a great source of iron and fiber (and is low-fat too), and the brand-new Cajun-style flavor blends long grain rice, Cajun seasonings, red beans and red and green bell peppers.

ub-rr-cajun-3d1.JPGDuring my test run with it, I grilled a piece of salmon on my mini grill, and put it on a bed of the rice - with enough rice left over to toss into my spinach salad the next day! (Do not give me that look. A bit of seasoned grain in salad makes a huge difference to the texture.) But Uncle Ben’s just sent me a recipe for it that I think might be even more fun to try!

UNCLE BEN’S® Spicy Cajun Rice and Shrimp Lettuce Wraps

Serving Size: 2 tbsp. of filling and one lettuce wrap

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 90 seconds

Makes: About 24 “cups”

Ingredients

1/2 lb. frozen, cooked shrimp

1 pouch Uncle Ben’s Ready Rice Cajun Style

1/2 tsp. hot sauce

1/4 tsp. garlic powder

1 tbsp. olive oil

1/3 cup red pepper, diced

1/3 cup scallions, diced

1 head iceberg lettuce

Instructions

1. Thaw shrimp by placing it in a bowl of cold water and allowing it to sit for about 15 minutes. Drain water, pat shrimp dry, remove tails and cut each shrimp into three pieces. Place in a medium size bowl.

3. Add hot sauce, garlic powder, olive oil, diced pepper and scallion to shrimp bowl. Toss well to thoroughly combine ingredients.

4. Prepare rice according to package instructions and place in large bowl to slightly cool. Then add shrimp mixture to the rice. Remove the core of the lettuce head and gently tear off the outer leaves.

5. If ready to eat lettuce wraps immediately, use one or two of the larger, outer leaves and scoop the filling into it using a tablespoon measuring utensil, wrap it up and enjoy!

If preparing the dish for later meal, prepare filling as directed above and then place mixture in a portable container and refrigerate. When ready to eat, heat rice mixture in microwave for one minute and then scoop a serving (two tablespoons) of the filling into one or two layers of the outer leaf, wrap it up and enjoy!

The remainder of the dish can be separated into individual servings or stored for future use.

Rice is more a staple of my life than I could have realized pre-moving, and I think a lot of you may feel the same way - so Uncle Ben’s has super generously offered to give TWO readers each a six-month supply of the new Uncle Ben’s Cajun-Style Ready Rice. To have your chance to win, please share how you plan to enjoy your rice, should you win. (And start making space in your cabinet…you are going to need it!)

Deadline for entries June 5. (But don’t expect to be notified then, I’ll be on a beach with my margarita that day…!)

Sexy is as sexy does (whatever that means)

May 29th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

Today has been an interesting day.

I spent the early morning hours of my day in the studio taping my segment for Wake Up to a Breakup. (And thus currently look way too glamorous to be sitting in this coffeehouse.)

Aside from breaking out my favorite new dress and getting to have my makeup done by a pro, the morning had a curious side effect - as you will see from the show when it’s online (in a few weeks), the content matter is very much about love, dating, and sex. Which sort of puts your mind in a certain place…

Plus, my segment is so tailored to my personality that you just may die. (Um, as in it’s called PINK WISDOM and the awesome makeup artist found a lip color that perfectly matched the pink in my dress.) It’s kind of like a fashionista wet dream.

Pair that with tomorrow being the release date of Sex and the City, and a girl may just be a little bit on edge!

One of the most fun parts of feeling good, and happy, and well, OK, I’ll say it…pretty damn sexy - whether on your own or with your mate - is dressing sexy. (Or at least using one as an excuse to do the other, which is my personal method of life.)

And so, it was a dangerous, dangerous time for me to be browsing lingerie sites.

carrie-flirty-night-chemise.jpg

I’m having major love for both OnGossamer and Carole Hochman today - especially since I can’t help but notice all the great ways that their line brings out the SATC-personality in all of us.

Examples:

Mesh OnGossamer chemise ***screams*** MIRANDA

And everyday pretty chemise: SAMANTHA

082519_gwn_blk_02.jpg
The Sunset beach Chemise (also OnGossamer) is delicately romantic and pretty…just like… CHARLOTTE

And finally, I love the Corded Rib & Lace Chemise, which of course, is in the spirit of my SATC-onality, Carrie!

082511_che_blk_02.jpg

And seriously, what is SATC love if not a passion of all things luxury, sexy, and fashionable?

With just about all of us having SATC fever (except my BFF, who I plan to hypnotize into submission), I am not the only one feeling just a little bit hot and bothered right now. I shall not be the only one slumbering in a cocoon of luxurious pretty underthings. By using the (EXCLUSIVE TO MY READERS!) promo code SATC, Alytude and Sheknows.com readers will 20% off any and all of their sexy bedtime shopping at both OnGossamer.com, and CaroleHochman.com, home to Midnight, a new intimates line that combines modern elegance with the new look of “vintage sexy” - and that discount will last for the entire next week (from 5 p.m. tomorrow till 5 p.m. next Friday, June 6.)

Wait till you see Carole Hochman’s new line - whether it’s hot or cold outside, trust me - it will keep you sizzling between the sheets. This line is totally luxe, channeling 1940’s boudoirs - and it shall be yours for a fraction of what all your friends are paying. (Unless you make them come here and read. As you should.)

And even MORE exciting (as if this day hasn’t been off the charts already!), four winners will each win one of the four On Gossamer SATC-love-inspiring looks above. To have your chance to win, show me your Sex and the City love…tell me your favorite episode ever, and how it effected your own life. (If you don’t watch? RESEARCH!) Deadline to enter is next Friday June 6th (as is the last day to use your exclusive discount!)

Good luck!

Spot on fashions!

May 28th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

To know me is to know I am mildly obsessed with polka dots…so much so I have just written a fashion trends feature on them!

So…check it out…and go dot your own wardrobe!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I most go apply an overnight hair masque, in preparation for my moment of small-screen (semi)fame.

It’s all about balance

May 27th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

A little while ago, I was decompressing from a day’s stress by enjoying a session of Fit TV yoga, when I realized something…exercise feels good.

It’s something I realized a few years ago, when I lost a ton of weight by eating less crap and more good-for-me foods. (Interesting note: Now, when I indulge in junk, the way it sits in my body after pretty much always makes me regret it.)

I’m not a stable person, alas- I need balance - and apparently, Dr. Sears (founder of The Zone Diet) agrees. His diet is pretty ingenious - it’s all about just that - balance and moderation! No punishment, no forbidden fruits (actually, are fruits ever forbidden???), it’s all about achieving the right balance.

Diet is not a dirty word - in fact, its root is a Greek word meaning “way of life”! If you incorporate that concept into whatever your healthy eating plan is, it will all make a lot more sense. Just living! We all know how to live. Kinda.

Any diet that uses the word high or low to describe it is not going to work. It just won’t. It’s all about moderation, which is what the Zone diet is - low-fat proteins, low glycemic-load carbs (mostly fruits and vegetables), and heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.

This is all very similar to the concepts I used to lose my weight, and it’s how I try to live to keep it off. But the Zone makes it even easier in that they have some delicious products to use when cooking that fit perfectly into the ideology.

Two of my favorites (which I have already cooked with!) are their all-natural Zone Pasta (formulated with protein ingredients from natural sources of peas and soy which both contain essential amino acids) and their Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil (super rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids).

The people at The Zone Diet want to help add a little balance (and yummy pasta) into your lives, and have offered to award five readers a special care package of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and a box of pasta. To have your chance to win, please:

1 - Write me a haiku (free verse is also acceptable, but haiku will show true effort!) about your weight-loss efforts (positive or negative) or aspirations.

2 - For extra credit, share three things you’ve learned reading my blog this week!

Deadline to enter is June 1. Good luck!

Help!

May 27th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

Nothing sums the state of your  life up like seeing your first apartment bug (I suppose it was inevitable) - and realizing you have no man to call to come kill it for you. (Or, to be more specific, none who will actually come should you call.)

And, yes, I realize that is very non-women’s-lib of me.

What a week!

May 27th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

So, Thursday morning, I am taping my first segment as Wake Up to a Breakup’s resident sex/love expert. It’s a really fun show, capitalizing on the “clicking chicks” phenomenon, with webisodes that target urban, unmarried women age 18-39 searching for answers or escape from romance gone wrong. Content includes advice from experts and authors — including ME - as well as lighthearted comedy spoofs, juicy celebrity break-ups and essential retail therapy.

Clearly, this is a match made in digital heaven - and as online video usage continues to increase while traditional TV viewing declines, I wonder if more and more of these types of programs will find their niche on the Internet … and all of our cable bills will go down? A girl can dream…

Anyway, I’m really excited (and honestly, feel like I should try to become a lot more knowledgeable before then!), but my main concern at this present moment…is deciding what to wear!

(Instructions on my call sheet read “cute dress”. Well….that’s like telling my puppy to remember to bring his slipper!)

Note: As I shall be leaving for South Beach in exactly six days and that event, too, requires due grooming diligence, this week may call for extra-careful pedicure maintenance. I shall keep you posted on how that goes!

Career choice saved me again!

May 27th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

NYPIRG representative just rang my door bell, presenting a petition for me to sign.

As I was briefly a NYPIRG member in college, and said organization has done some pretty awesome things, I figured there was no harm in listening, and signing what he presented. (Especially since the whole platform seemed to make sense to me.)

Apparently, doing so made me look like a potential comrade.

“You know, for a small donation, you can become a member.”

“Thanks…I’m happy to sign, but I can’t make a donation right now.”

“Oh come on? Even a small one?”

“No, sorry. But I am signing…”

“Maybe just a $30 donation? Would that work?”

“No…I have no money to donate today.”

“We take checks!”

“Sorry.”

“What do you do?”

“I’m a writer.”

“Oh really? For who?”

“Well, sort of for myself…”

“Oh.” (Audible pause during which I swear he looked at me with sympathy!) “I understand. Well, have a good night!”

Talk about career of dubious distinction.

SATC countdown!

May 27th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

When the series ended several years ago, I canceled my HBO subscription and immediately started to pine for a Sex and the City movie. I think I pretty much lost interest in television, at that point, as well.

Now, the premiere is only a few days away! Short of being “that girl” and wearing a SATC t-shirt to the Thursday night midnight-showing (as-if), I’ve been on a dedicated research of SATC-inspired merchandise.

Check out some of the most recent sex-abulous findings:

Hello Lover

For emblazoned goodies including robes, hoodies, and yoga pants, visit HBO’s Hello Lover Shop. We love the stiletto tote bag for shoe-changing on the go. This is also a great place to pick up the Sex & the City Complete Series DVD set (right now on sale for $100 off list price!!!) to catch up on all the drama before the movie hits theaters.

Power Lingerie

Now even your undergarments can say, “I’m SO the Carrie!” Cosabella recently released their SATC lingerie collection which includes, of course, four mini-collections dedicated to each character. Prices range from $22 to $162. And speaking of lingerie, in episode 69, the sexiest of the city girls Samantha breaks up with Richard and gives back the beautiful pearl thong he had given her (a “powerful” piece of lingerie). Want your own? No prob! Just visit Yandy.com and order yours for about $64.

Arm Candy!

Bag Borrow or Steal has dedicated a whole section on their site to the handbag personality. Start by taking a purse-onality quiz, then browse designer bags by your favorite character! My favorite? The Prada Rose Satchel! (Currently on wait list, get in line, darling.)

Now, if we could only be so smart about preparing to pre-order tickets!!!
