Romantic real estate

March 27th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

A lot of us are (ahem) looking for a place to live. And we may be tempted to jump on the first affordable studio anywhere near a subway that allows inhabitation of adorable little pups.

But…wait! You want to consider who you will run into when getting your morning coffee or evening martini, and help is on the way.

I’ve just discovered Cyberhomes.com, a new online property information site that gives you a look into the singles make-up of your zip code. Just type in your address or zip code at Cyberhomes.com and you will get back information on the percent of married/single/divorced people in your neighborhood, the median age range and even the male/female ratio in your particular zip code! Dig even deeper to find the breakdown of political party dominance (if your looking for a right or left-wing hottie) and average level of education.

Dating is pretty daunting…knowing you have a great shot of finding your other half right in your backyard is great way to get a headstart.

Diva dudes

March 27th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

Reason 412 I love my friends.

Guy I am buds with just emails. “FYI, I’m taking tomorrow off. I’m getting a body wrap.”

“OMG, really?”

“That is so one of those things I shouldn’t have told you.”

Indeed, it wasn’t! But kudos to you for being man enough to admit it!

Pretty petticoats!

March 26th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

Check out my cute new outfit!

(Not me. My hair does not allow photographs this afternoon.)

Straight from the Spring ‘08 line of Effie’s Heart, I am obsessed with my new petticoat skirt. The one I received is in fog gray with a scarletberry petticoat, and it adorably screams spring fling. (Not that I do. I tend to coyly whisper.) The skirt is double-layered with side pouch pockets and boasts a larger-than- circle cut and a contrast petticoat underskirt. It is perfectly complemented by the matching hat - also in scarletberry! A 1920s inspired cloche, it has contrast top stitching, a scallop back detail and an artisan style button flower accent. Totally cute!

Kimo, the creator of the Effie’s Heart line, is a woman after my own heart (no pun intended). Using color palettes inspired by antique catalogs, art history, nature, and vintage clothing, she has painted a fashion canvas that touches on vintage feel, but has a vision toward modern eclectic beauty. It’s deliciously unique, and many of her pieces are a must try for spring flirtiness.

Exciting news: One winner will receive this outfit as well (so, we can be…long-distance twins!). To have your chance to win the hat and skirt you see here, I want you to try to be creative…so, using any media of art (poetry, prose, or drawing a picture), depict your own tribute to petticoats! (Silly? I don’t think so. I was once moved to elated hysteria because I saw handmade pantaloons at a craft fair.)

Deadline March 31.

Help me with my homework!

March 26th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

This week, I’m working on a summer music roundup for a men’s-entertainment mag (think firecracker wings and beer).

I have a few releases in mind already, but I was wondering if any of you wise, beautiful people had a tip on an album I absolutely must check out? Share!

Thai yum

March 25th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

I’m feeling very proud.

Normally, an evening out at my favorite Thai restaurant means my standby of Pad Kee Mao (i.e. spicy stir-fried rice noodles in basil sauce) and quite often an appetizer of deep fried tofu or dumplings.

Tonight though, I decided to try something slightly less evil - and it turned out to be surprisingly delicious. So that I can pass on my discovery to all of you, check out the recipe below.

Steamed Sea Bass - Thai Style

1 bunch fresh coriander, chopped (cilantro)
1 teaspoon fresh ginger, chopped
1 orange, juice of
1 lemon, juice of
2 tablespoons light soy sauce
1 bunch spring onions, chopped
2 teaspoons Thai fish sauce
2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
1 red chili, chopped
1 teaspoon sweet chili sauce

1. Apart from the sea bass, mix all the other ingredients together.
2. Arrange the sea bass fillets on a sheet of tin foil so that the shiny side is on the outside.
3. Score the fillets, and pull up the corners of the foil. Spoon over the Thai dressing and crimp the corners together to create a sealed bag.
4. Dip the base of the bag in some oil and place on a chargrill or hot dry pan and cook for 10 minutes.
5. Remove from the pan, tear open bag and serve.

(Mine was served on a bed of brown rice, and it was delicious!)

Full disclosure: This dinner was, in theory, a healthy-eating victory. However, two martinis accompanied it. Alas. Baby steps.

Perhaps our love will never entirely fade.

March 25th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

Starbucks and I were reunited tonight. We still have some issues to work through, but I have to say, it’s sort of like going home. A home bespeckled with cinnamon and robust flavors and just a little bit of foam.

To celebrate — free sample of Starbucks Coffee for all!

The dirty dozen

March 25th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

I’d love to eat totally organic - but most of us can’t afford that. We can make changes where it matters most though, and MSN has a great article today on the 12 foods you should always go the organic route on. I’m taking notes as I … type. (That sounded funnier in my head.)

Heal thyself?

March 25th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

How fascinating that I receive the below horoscope in my inbox, just as I’m reading up on a new wellness center in the city that has a quantum energy healing treatment!

You need to take it easy for now, because your energy is moving at a slower pace than the rest of the world. That could make you grumpy, but the good news is that you’re working out some subconscious issues.

I think the universe is mandating I plan a visit immediately. Will report back!

Coffee culture

March 25th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

As Starbucks and I are currently on a break, I ducked into a small independent coffee house this morning to get my pre-work soy latte.

The bored-looking hipster barista greeted me and asked my order.

“A grande soy latte, please?”

He openly smirked. I instantly realized what I had done. I deserved the smirk.

Has Starbucks truly infiltrated my soul to this level? Will I continue to walk into other (and better!) coffeehouses and yet…call out ‘bux sweet nothings, out of habit?

Surely there’s a cure.

Terror-free talk time

March 24th, 2008 by Aly Walansky

This afternoon, I attempted to navigate six chat windows, two email applications, and three word documents while participating in several back-to-back conference calls. The phone to my ear all that time, I likely have all sorts of fun radiation flowing through me, and my adorable little pink phone found itself exhausted and wilted from multiple hours of gripping use.

Obviously, I (and my adorable newborn phone) would have been better off if I had utilized one of my favorite new accessories.

I’ve tried a lot of Bluetooth headsets in the past year - but my newest one is quite possibly the sexiest one yet.

jawbone.jpgThe Aliph Jawbone Noise Shield Bluetooth Headset is an advanced, military-grade noise cancelling system that can adapt to your environment continuously as you use it. It’s user-friendly: It can be worn on either ear and includes four ear loops and five ear buds for your ideal custom fit, and you can charge it simply and easily via a USB cable.

All this mumbo-jumbo may sound great, but here’s something I couldn’t ignore: CNET said it was the best-looking headset they’d *ever* seen and it’s pretty much the highest rated headset of all time. Now that it’s sitting in front of me, I can’t help but agree. Aside from being sexy and comfortable, it has awesome audio quality and even more impressive technology behind it. The Jawbone has three different microphones built into the voice-activity sensor plus Aliph’s proprietary Noise Shield.

Ever try to cope with maintaining a phone conversation while on a busy highway or windy intersection? It’s hardly worth bothering. Try it with this though - it won’t only block out outside noises, but amplify your own voice. In fact, your caller may not even realize you are on the road at all. (Perfect for your stealthy getaways.)

What is your worst story of cell-phone chatting gone bad? Did you get caught driving on the phone, and get a monster ticket? Did you have too much noise interruption or drop a call and misunderstand an important message? It can lead to terrible mixed signals and tremendous misunderstandings…or just a little bit of a giggle. Tell your tale! 10 best responses by Friday win a Jawbone of their own in their choice of red, black, or silver!
