I wake up, and there’s 2 police cars, an ambulance, and a mysterious black van parked next door to my house.
Oddly, this increased level of “protection” is rather frightening.

ummm, yeah, dunno if I am missing out on someting here, but could your neighbor have died. Police, ambulance, and a CORONER’S van. I wouldn’t panic, but then I live too close to chicago for a lot of things not to seem weird, lol
