Your Music … Everywhere!

June 29th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

How many times have you wished you could take control of what is played on the radio?

DLO’s just-released TuneStik combines a wireless FM transmitter with a powerful RF remote control for iPod playback and control in the car, at home – in reality, anywhere you find yourself in the company of an FM radio.

What makes this gadget cool is that it contains a remote control plus an integrated 30-pin pass-through dock connector, which gives you the freedom to combine TuneStik with virtually any iPod accessory – adding an RF remote and an FM transmitter to nearly all your iPod gear.

We also love that it’s battery-free - the TuneStik draws its power from your iPod. (Only one thing to remember to charge!)

And what do we like most of all? DLO has generously offered five TuneStiks to give away! Leave me a comment and tell me why this is a must-have accessory for your iPod wardrobe. Best answers win! Deadline to enter is Monday July 2 at 8 pm.

Morning Commute

June 29th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

The daily ritual of the morning commute often provides an arena to observe the variants of human behavior. We all have our traits: those who sit on the subway gabbing into their phone at obnoxious levels, others who eat their breakfast, spitting and spilling about with no regard, those who are oblivious to the concept of personal space.

Annoyances and disturbances are common, sometimes even comical. But lack of humanity, that is a sudden gust that stops you in your tracks as the train continues to roar along.

A.M. rush hour is typically the safest time of day to travel. The rails are crowded, the sky is bright. It’s not the time you expect anything out of the ordinary.

Today, though, was different. As I sat on my usual subway at an early, barely light, hour, we passed a station not too far from my home. As I sat on the citybound train, prepared to break out my new issue of Time Out New York, I glanced out the window, and noticed what appeared to be a ruckus across on the opposite platform.

At first glance, it was rough-housing. On second, it was clearly a struggle — an elderly man fruitlessly attempting to hold on to his computer bag as two teenagers ripped it away from him. In the struggle, the man fell, and the assailants ran down the steps, presumably, out of the station.

And our train continued to roll on.

All morning, as I worked, my thoughts returned to what I had seen. The man, abandoned — how did he get home? Did anyone ever help him? The thugs, I assume are off enjoying their newfound gadgets. Did they steal for a reason? Did they feel this would assuage some need of theirs? Or was this… fun? I do not understand people.

My initial thought was that, for me, this was a sign to move elsewhere. Sadly though, I’m pretty sure there is no elsewhere insolent amorality and evil is hindered.

Sex Jumps on the Organic Bandwagon

June 27th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

Eco-friendly and cool as you are, you make important decisions every day that will shape the earth around you. You eat organic fruits (they taste better anyway), you choose paper over plastic, you are on top of your game.

But the green movement does not end there. It has gotten way more personal than you may have expected.

Meet the latest generation of the legendary rabbit — the toy that brought toys to the mainstream. (Who doesn’t remember when Charlotte hid her rabbit behind a stuffed bunny?) The gadget that revolutionized sex is now bringing tree-hugging to a whole new level.

The latest incarnation of the rabbit is sheathed in 100% premium Elastomer, a high-quality material that is both latex and phthalate free but still incredibly soft. Why do you care about this? Well, Read the rest of this entry »

Smiles All Around

June 26th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

To be the “prettiest girl with the worst teeth” is a dubious distinction, at best, but when it leads one of the world’s most elite cosmetic dentists to make you an incredible offer in the name of “his greatest challenge in a decade”, bittersweet compliments are put aside and one jumps at the opportunity.

Dr. Jeff Golub-Evans, dubbed by Vogue Magazine as “the guru of cosmetic dentistry”, and New York Magazine as the purveyor of “the great white hope” invited me to his Upper East Side offices, the New York Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, a few months ago, to try his Zoom whitening system. At the time we met, Dr. Golub-Evans took one look at my funky-toothed smile and made me an offer previously existing only in my fantasies: a complete smile makeover.

Since then, “before” shots have been taken, and, now, “after” shots are upcoming. (You’ll have to come back another time to see those!) But today was the main event and it was a thundering victory. The guru is indeed the master of his craft.

What did I have done? Well, you’ll have to wait till the pictures…and the article on SheKnows.com to find out. But, be assured, “prettiest girl with worst teeth” is no longer a moniker I’ll be going by.

One Day and Counting…

June 25th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

Tomorrow will be such a momentous day in the crazy journey that is my life that I have turned to a jaunty tune by one of my favorite bands in order to reflect its relevance and offer proper tribute:

I’ve Got a Fang

By They Might be Giants

Glistening white triangular tooth
Open up a can of tomato juice

I’ve got a fang
I’ve got a fang
I’ve got a fang

Girlfriend took me to meet her dad
He didn’t like me because I look so bad

I’ve got a fang
I’ve got a fang
I’ve got a fang

Girlfriend took me to meet her mom
Her head exploded like a atom bomb

I’ve got a fang
I’ve got a fang
I’ve got a fang

I’ve got a fang
I’ve got a fang
I’ve got a fang

Glistening white triangular tooth
Open up a can of tomato juice

I’ve got a fang
I’ve got a fang
I’ve got a fang

What Your Pet Says About You

June 24th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

According to a recent study by Lavalife.com, one’s choice in pets can have a very accurate reflection of their lifestyle.

For instance, a tiny-dog lover such as myself is “easily influenced and trend-conscious”, and craves attention. Such a person has a style that includes being seen in the “right places” with the “right people” and though they may enjoy trying hot restaurants, they will be way too concerned with their “bonsai proportions” to actually do much indulging.

Now, I ask you, friends…is any of this actually the case?

Can You Speak 8th Grade?

June 24th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

According to my friend Susan, the latest key-word lingo among the young and cool is: popping. (Usage: Your jeans are popping.)

This trend is evidenced in the following (frighteningly popular) lyrics by Lil’ Mama:

They say my lip gloss is popping
My lip gloss is cool
All the boys keep jocking
They chase me after school

Oh, the innocence of youth.

White-Hot Fashions

June 24th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

As you are out enjoying your first official weekend of summer, you may notice a stark whiteness in your midst.

Apparently, “the new black” this season…is white, and white fashions are, well, white-hot, and as usual, I’ve found a stack of on-trend pieces I cannot live without.

“This is the season to be white hot!” says Sara Rogers, the trend specialist of the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. From skirts to skorts, jeans to gauchos, this is a look that is everywhere.

By White Rice, these sailor gauchos are adorable. (Remember, there’s a nautical trend this season as well.) With faux button sailor front and wide gaucho leg, they are also slimming enough to hide those margaritas you indulged in last weekend. Available at Artfulwears.com.

Remember that poetry bag I can’t put down? At April Cornell Online, you’ll also find a great selection of signature whites (many currently on sale for up to 30% off!). The Sunday tunic, above, with the faux Mandarin collar, is a great choice for a cozy weekend morning.

Available at SmartBargains.com, the Ruby Rox Cotton Sundress is great to stay cool while still looking hot. When the night cools down, pair it with this great cropped jacket from Venus.com:

We also love this cute Venus.com white denim mini skort:

Sexy summer tops can be a great way to accent your look with the newest styles without going crazy. Frederick’s of Hollywood has a wide selection to choose from, including:

Even denim-dwellers are with the white craze, and I’ve been stalking Fidelity Denim’s summer looks for months:

(Check out the punch of black shoes or accessories with the white fabrics. Awesome.)

Reveal Your Skin

June 23rd, 2007 by Aly Walansky

My new favorite skin regime:

My good friends at lovelyskin.com have been telling me about RevaleSkin for a while. It’s about time I listened.

LovelySkin is the first web site/doctor’s office in the nation to carry this revolutionary new product created from CoffeeBerry extract. The CoffeeBerry is antioxidant-rich (greater than pomegranate and green tea combined) and when used in skin trials, has been proven to be a great defense against everything from environmental stressors to wrinkles.

This all sounded very enticing, but jaded as I am, I believe nothing until I perform “clinical trials” of my own. So, I did - both me and my mom have been using the 3-part set (day cream, night cream, and cleanser) religiously for a few weeks - and we both love it. The cleanser actually cleanses (very often gentle cleansers fail to get the job done) and the cream has both our faces smoother and skin calmer than a lot of the pricey stuff we’ve tried other times.

I am hooked. So hooked that I may have to start stalking LovelySkin.com - it’s currently the only place you can get this product. (It will soon be widely available through aesthetic physicians offices.)

Strap on Some Sex Appeal

June 22nd, 2007 by Aly Walansky

The most annoying part of my strappy tank tops (beside my embarrassing lack of cleavage and the inability to wear most of my push-up bras with them) — is the tell-tale bra straps that show out beneath the spaghetti fabric.

I have found there is an answer:

Strappys are decorative bra straps that attach to any of your bras with removal straps. (I love to wear it with my Margarita Couture push-ups.) Available in beads, stones, and fabric — they dress up even the plainest of tanks, and make even us “petite” gals feel bosom-happy and cleavage-sexy.

Well, almost. They are really pretty though.
