Rock Your Religion

April 30th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

Does your wardrobe need a little rocking out?

Rock Your Religion is a high-end accessories company inspired by ancient religious symbols, transformed into rock-inspired metal pendants and leather cuffs. Launched at a packed SOHO party this weekend, it’s destined to be hit with rockers and trendsters alike, and it goes for a noble cause: 1% of all yearly Rock Your Religion purchases will be donated to the VH1 Save The Music Foundation.

This is not your mom’s traditional jewels and are perfect mates for your sexy summer jeans and tank outfits. Check them out at: http://www.rockyourreligion.com

I am presently rocking the Chi Ro pendant and planning on grabbing up the Star of David line when it’s available this summer.

Margaritas, anyone?

April 30th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

According to findings by U.S. and Thai researchers, the process of adding ethanol (the type of alcohol found in rum, vodka, tequila, etc.) to strawberries and blackberries increases the activity of the antioxidants in the fruits.

The researchers further that colored fruit might be more healthful with the addition of booze.

Dr Frankie Phillips of the British Dietetic Association said: “This is an interesting piece of research and illustrates that the antioxidant capacity of berries can be enhanced by combining them with volatile substances such as alcohol. It’s well known that some preparation of fruit and veg can enhance the availability of nutrients and other plant chemicals including antioxidants.”

i.e.: Something to keep in mind for Cinco de Mayo — Margaritas are GOOD FOR YOU!

Designer Doggies

April 29th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

My puppies have a yen for street couture.

lilyfrankietoy.jpg
Lily is hot for high-fashion bows and accessories, and Frankie, he likes to wrap his teeth around frilly underthings. (Boys will be boys.)

Attached as I am, I don’t like to share. It was time to get them some goodies of their own.

The kids are in love with their new toys from Bamboo Pet Center. Lily gets to rock out her pink fetish, I get to keep my shoes. It’s a great arrangement. Bamboo’s toys are super durable, so when the pups (or kitties) are in combat, no worries of them ripping apart their flying cow. They’ll do that to each other instead.

PS: Check out the new issue of Animal Fair Magazine - Lily makes her print debut. (Oh, and I have a few articles in there too.)

Material Girl (Prom minus six days.)

April 28th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

My new friend, designer Derek De Vette says: “A few years ago, I was invited to a grown-up retro-80s party in Beverly Hills. There were major A-list stars there and everyone went all out. Nobody really went vintage. …What I saw the most of was a lot of Madonna outfits circa the Like a Virgin album cover—black bustier and lace skirts, hair up with ribbon tied, dark eyeliner, big earrings, lots of bangle bracelets, dark cut-off tights or leggings with white socks and ankle boots! The other women wore tight black dresses (ala Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love video) with black nylons, high heels and sported MAJOR hair spray and eyeliner. Everyone was in the complete spirit of play about the entire evening and had a blast.”

Derek (www.thomasdevette.com) knows his stuff.

When in Rome…

Another new (and possibly best) friend, Jackie from Squeaky Wheel Promotions is loaning me attire that is quintessentially occasion-appropriate in the wake of Derek’s sage advice and my own historic cultural leanings. It is sailing the skies as we speak. More info to come…

From the Darkness, A Bright Light Emerges

April 27th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

I have found Dr. McDreamy, and he ain’t on Gray’s Anatomy — he’s conveniently located on the Upper East Side of NYC, and since crossing paths with him, my pearly gates are gleaming as they never have before.

For those of you who have not been following my long and harrowing tales of teeth woe, it has been a sad tale of dashed hopes, missed opportunities, and painful regret. My first attempt at whitening at another location was met with heartbreak, to be followed by weeks of reflection and contemplation. (And getting some cavities filled.)

Intent to get right back astride that horse (prom is coming up, after all), I paid a visit to the New York Center for Cosmetic Dentistry and visited with Dr. Jeff Golub-Evans who the bible of style culture, Vogue, cited as the “guru of cosmetic dentistry”.

When Vogue speaks, I listen.

Dr. Golub-Evans is the pioneer of a technique called QuickWhite™, which whitens teeth in about twenty minutes — less time than it takes for a manicure. The doctor uses a “whitening cocktail” that contains diamond dust to pre-cleanse and bleach teeth before sending you off on a journey under the Zoom2 lamp (military-strength amorphous calcium phosphate-1 in addition to hydrogen peroxide) and it gets pretty instant results.

As with all my other parts, my teeth have issues — among them, too much fluoride. (Check out the “before” picture below, you will notice my teeth have more shades than your average bad highlight job.) This means:

A - A madman broke into my home and sprayed noxious gases in my mouth.

B - I had lots of fevers as a kid. (My mother assures me it’s B.)

That said, I’m not the ideal candidate for whitening - I’ll get whiter, but it can’t necessarily make all the colors of the rainbow match. It seems to have come close though! Check out how much lighter my teeth are, after just one visit:

I am whiter, brighter, and smitten - so much so that I’m visiting Dr. Golub-Evans again in a few weeks. We’re going to re-make my smile, one bite at a time.

Prom minus seven days

April 27th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

I have been invited to prom.

It’s an adult retro-80s pseudo-parody event, but it promises to, potentially, be the penultimate in the history of the tradition.

(Most notably because my own age-appropriate prom ended in my date drinking too much paper-cup wine, dancing on the table, and being picked up by his mom.)

To further complicate the situation, eBay has forsaken me and the hot vintage look I won in an auction has never arrived, seller disappeared. Will I have to prom in my skivvies? Will my teeth live to save the day (alas, whitening today). And, gasp, will my hair behave?

This, much like the rain of toads outside my window, is a disaster of potentially epic proportions. Friends, readers, I beseech you…help me get ready! It is but a week away.

Art and Bubbly

April 26th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

Part of my job is the (alas) chore of attending media events in celebration of various lines or launches. As you go to enough of them, you discover that some places do this well, and others, well, just don’t.

My favorite parties are always thrown by KMR Communications, and this week, they held the exclusive New York exhibition of the work of French artist Cyrille Margarit, whose work showcases digital images projected onto sheets of brushed aluminum.

The event was held at Bruno Jamais on the Upper East Side of New York City, an elegant restaurant famous for its champagne (which I proudly imbibed my share of).

Airbourne Contagions

April 25th, 2007 by Aly Walansky

Apparently, germ warfare is alive and (not) well in New York City.

This morning, I innocently cradled my ginger-peach vitamin water as I entered the subway, excited to embark on an hour of uninterrupted headphone-wearing serenity. It is a gorgeous day in New York, I have plans to attend the Townhouse Spa Dream Ball tonight, and last night I engaged in wine, sushi, and brownies with some of my favorite people on the planet.

Alas, we knew such revel could not last.

My content tune-age is interrupted by a flutter of activity. As the quintessential suburban soccer mom enters (read: waist sack, unkempt, and frazzled), she ushers in a rather adorable but disturbed-looking child.

“Excuse us, can she sit next to you? She’s not feeling very well.”

Wonderful. I picture vomit soon to fall on my brand-new dress.

“Um, ok.” I hope what she has isn’t too bad. I’m not getting my teeth whitened until Friday, and after all I’ve been through, the least I deserve is death with white teeth.

The little girl sits down, ashen and dejected. Mother sits on the other side. Of course, this is the sort of threesome that enters my world.

“She woke me up this morning with 104 fever. I’m worried, the school sent a letter home that a very contagious strain of strep was going around.”

I listen and sigh politely, remembering several years ago when face masks were the style on the subway. Where are they when you need them?

I take a sip of my mineral water, wishing I still had shot packs in my possession and pointedly turn back to my headphones. If I’m about to be deathly ill, I’m going to enjoy myself while I can.

Mother keeps talking. Geez, maybe death wouldn’t be so bad.

“She’s been sick for days, and the fever just won’t go away.” Lovely. Perhaps she’s allergic to her mother.

Little girl looks down at her feet, sad. I commiserate.

Say your prayers.
